OER17 presents an opportunity for open practitioners, activists, educators and policy makers to come together as a community to reflect on ‘The Politics of Open’. What are our current key challenges and strengths – locally, nationally, and  internationally?

Seminar “Recognition of open, online learning: are we there yet?” Gabi Witthaus, Airina Volungevi?ien?, and Marius Šadauskas was held during conference on April 5th, 2017.

This presentation aims to identify and celebrate some of the progress that is currently being made towards greater recognition by educational institutions and employers of non-formal, open learning. In recent years, there has been a proliferation of open educational content and open, online courses. Learners are also increasingly being offered the opportunity to receive formal credentials for their non-formal, open, online learning, for example many providers of massive open, online courses (MOOCs) award credits for successful completion. However, very little is yet known about the willingness of educational institutions or employers to subsequently recognise such learning achievements (Reushle, Antonio & Keppell, 2016).
